Community Cooking Workshop

Event Highlights

August 2024

This cooking workshop was a follow-up event to the community outreach event. This was an opportunity to apply their knowledge of healthy living to meal preparation.

The workshop started with a short lesson on Canada's Food Guide's recommendations for a healthy diet. As seen in the photo, the children all received a handout of the food guide plate; as a group, we explored each food group and ways to implement more nutritious foods into our diets.

Following this short lesson, I gave a demonstration on making a simple but nutritious meal: pinwheel sandwiches with a fruits and veggies. The sandwiches were a great source of protein, vegetables and whole grains, containing hummus, chicken, cheese and spinach. In addition, apples and tomatoes were served on the side.

Following the demonstration, the children each made their own sandwiches. All of them had a lot of fun assembling their own healthy meal and especially enjoyed eating the apples and tomatoes!

While they ate their meals, I was also able to teach the kids the "Healthy Living Song", which they enjoyed singing. Overall, this was a great learning experience for all the kids and their parents too!

In this video, I was teaching them about the whole grains section of the Canada's Food Guide plate. The kids had an opportunity to name the various foods they saw on the plate and learn about the nutritional benefits of those foods.

This video shows snippets of the cooking demonstration I did for the kids. The information taught in the lesson was incorporated into this hands-on cooking activity.
